Re: [mexicanbandsters] fills included in quoted price?

2006-08-31 23:49:31

I am starting a new file in the database to show the price of fills, price of surgery, price and date of any discounts offered and where (in relation to the USA) the doc is located. http://tinyurl.com/scr0

So if you know the prices your Doc charges (today's price) and his location (proximity to the USA,) please feel free to add it, or tell me and I'll be glad to add it.

Thanks!

Sylvia

I've occasionally seen reference to the fact that certain doctors in Mexico don't charge for the follow up fills. I don't see that included in the package prices I've seen on the web. Does anyone know anything about this?

I can get free flights to San Diego, so getting fills for cheap or nothing would be a major bonus. (My best friend works for Southwest)

I'm currently leaning towards Dr. Ortiz or Dr. Lopez just because of the flight convenience. The flight to Monterrey is out of an airport an hour away and will cost at least $400 per person each trip. San Diego is further, but it is free for both me and my friend for as long as she is working there.

Re: [mexicanbandsters] Paying for surgery beforehand??!!

2006-08-31 18:12:40

Hi there, I found that all of the surgeons that I researched either required the full payment or a partial payment wired to their bank account prior to surgery. As long as you have researched your surgeon, there shouldn't be a problem.

Good Luck,

Hi Trish, I arrived around noon at Dr. Sanchez's office and was
banded around 2pm. BUT, I had all my testing done and faxed to him
so I didn't have to be bothered with tests. Hope this helps! Ardie

Paying for surgery beforehand??!!

2006-08-31 01:08:23

Hello! Just wondering about payments. My Doctor's US person wants me
to pay her in full (send payment to the Doctors American Bank account
in Texas) BEFORE I leave. Is that normal? This is not a doctor that
has a lot of Bandsters out there for me to check with...although his
website says there are 3,500 surgeries that he has assisted or
performed. Just curious before I send my life's savings PLUS some!

Re: [mexicanbandsters]Extra nights at hotel!

2006-08-30 23:42:30

I flew down to get my surgery on Thursday, surgery was scheduled for Friday, but they decided to put me in the hospital and go ahead and do my surgery the same day I got there, but by the time they got around to me, it was midnight, and I was in the hospital until Saturday about noon. Then I stayed three nights at the hotel before I flew home. I was glad I stayed those three nights before flying home because I was sore, and I would have hated traveling the day after surgery and being that sore, but it would not have been the end of the world. It was cheaper on plane fare to stay over the weekend anyway, and it costs the same amount for the hotel that we saved on the air fare. the doctor gave us two nights at the hotel with his charges. So we only paid for one extra night at the hotel. I spent two nights at the hospital, Thursday and Friday.

Re: [mexicanbandsters] OK...I am doing it!!

2006-08-30 12:28:40

I am confused. You are having surgery on the 30th, so you will need to go down the 29th correct? and then you will have all your preop that day, surgery on the 30th, leave hospital on the 31st and then fly home the next day?

November 1st is day of the dead and from what I understand, one of the biggest holidays in mexico- parades throughout the streets even in the smallest towns. Just something to keep in mind for travel purposes.

I am flying down on Nov 3rd, surgery on the 4th and could come home on friday but the flight was 200 cheaper if we stayed over the weekend. ( 200 x 3 is a lot more than a hotel room for 2 nights) and we will check out Rosario beach and the Ensanda markets if I feel ok..

. I am curious to hear how long others stays were.

Did anyone have to purchase 2 place seats?

2006-08-30 10:14:03

I weigh 358 and have been told by all carriers I called that I would have to purchase an extra seat. They said I could get a refund if the flight was not full but if the flight was full and I had NOT purchased an extra seat I would have to take a differnt flight.

I called American, Southwest, America West and United and they all ave me a similar story.

Re: [mexicanbandsters] Where to find cheapest flights?

2006-08-30 07:34:53

I got mine from AOL travel- travelocity. Nonstop STL to SAN for under 300 per ticket on a non stop flight. It is now over 400 for the same flight.

If you cannot get a two-three week advance purchase and stay over a saturday it will be a few hundred dollars more.

OK...I am doing it!!

2006-08-29 21:25:26

I have chosen Dr. Lopez.......would love to hear from anyone who used him, good or bad. :))

I have scheduled my surgery for the 30th of this month (but can change to the 31rst), so I could get in on the October special pricing.

Is anyone here going at that same time??? Please contact me if you are, would love to correspond and meet up with you!!

Support group.

2006-08-29 15:18:50

Lori, I imagine that Dr. Snow may have a lot more patients down here being in the metroplex than maybe you do in your area, possibly the volume is why he can do the fills cheaper and why his support group is successful, as well as the fact that he is one of the best surgeons around here to do the band surgery. He seems to have some special talent for laparoscopic surgery . He has a nurse who manages the support group and they apparently have about 50 people who show up from time to time, but I've been to it twice and the first time there were only about 12 and the second time there were the same amount but some of the people were different. The nurse schedules speakers from different places. Once she had a nutritionist, then a exercise person, a make over person, a clothes person, a bunch of different kinds of doctors , some of whom who'd had the band surgery. Sometimes they don't have a speaker and people just ask questions, discuss problems, last time we even
tasted various kinds of protein drinks. I even went out to eat afterwards with some of the people from the group, that was interesting, banded people looked like they were just playing in their food. They also collect clothes from members who have gotten too small for their clothes and they keep them there for people to use. Maybe you could start a support group yourself, they sure are interesting, I'd never seen a banded person until I went to one. Seeing them and talking in person is a whole different feeling than being on the internet with them. Also, anyone can come to Dr. Snow's support group, many spouses come. I guess they are supporters too and it's educational for them, they learn how we feel and how to best support us and to understand how the band works from hearing real life stories. I had the support group explain to my husband how it feels to not be able to "just quit eating so much and you'd lose weight". After that he never brought that up again.

I've been Banded!!!!

2006-08-29 02:03:24

Well, I got back yesterday from Monterrey. Dr. Roberto Rumbaut did my surgery on Tuesday and I could have not been more pleased with him, his staff, the hospital, and yes even down to the hotel. EVERYONE was more than hospitable and even made my skeptical mother feel comfortable from day one! I am not gonna ramble on about my entire trip from start to finish, because it has all been done before. But I will say a couple of things that may help soon to be bandesters. I have read posted messages about the gas pains that you will have after surgery and the doctors will tell you to do an ounce or Maylox 4 times a day. Forget it!!! it wont help, well a tiny bit. But, I have found something that will (thanks to my nanny that had had some lapriscopie work done before) Mylanta Gas Maximum Strength. Little bitty pill with big working wonders!!! PACK IT WITH YOU!! Second, call your airline and request a wheelchair for you for each of your stops back home....wether you need it
or not!! This is the fastest way you will EVER get through customs and immigration. You get to go through with the flight crews (Thank you to Albert of Oklahoma for letting me know of this while his sister (from Texas) was also being banded by Dr. Rumbaut). If anyone has any questions about Dr. Rumbaut, please email me. I would be more than happy to tell you all I know.

Hey Sylvia, I looked at the fill doc list and thought I'd fill in a
space that's blank on TRA. They charge $350 for a fill. Also, I'd
only recommend one doc there and that's Dr. Piexotto. ;) He's the
best and he's the most caring of a Bandster's success ... and I've
had successful fills with him.

HA! ANOTHER FUNNY POST FROM SYLVIA! Hey Sylvia, great point! And
the newbies have GOT TO KNOW that there are NO SHORT CUTS to this
process! NEWBIES ... you have got to do your research, privately
interview some Bandsters, collect information, read the Inamed
handbook, decide what qualities and conveniences you are looking for
in choosing your own surgeon ... there's a lot of things to take
into consideration! I had very strong reasons for choosing my
doctor and would never have considered some of the other doctors
that other Bandsters go to. So first ... instead of Newbies asking
Bandsters who our favorite doctors are ... they first need to ask
themselves ... What criteria is most important for themselves and
then do a process of elimination!
Wishing all the Newbies success in their research!

will not cover the band and can't afford US fees. He is very nice and
personable. I am not yet banded, but he will be doing my surgery
shortly, along with fixing my hiatal hernia. You will have to call to

Re: [mexicanbandsters] Found a fill doc (additional questions)!!

2006-08-26 04:02:12

My surgery date with Dr. Kuri is 10/31 (next Friday!!)
I also found a doctor in my area who will do the fill
for an initial fee of around $800, each fill after
that is $200. I don't think I would save any money
using local doctor compare to airfare for traveling
back to TJ for fill by doctor Kuri, maybe saving
traveling time, that's all.
I have two questions:
1/ how important or necessary to do the fill with
flouroscopy?
2/ Should I trust a local doctor handling my band when
he does not use flouroscopy during the fill process?
(or should I trust any doctor for that matter to care
for my band, except Dr. Kuri who will do the band for
me.)?
Thanks for taking time to answer my questions.

Wow, Doug. I am so sorry you have had this experience! You are right, though,
the aftercare is extremely vital after a procedure like this. It isn't like
taking out a gallbladder or removing tonsils. It requires lifelong changes and
constant attention from the patient and there is no doubt that contact with the
surgeon after the fact is so important.
I have to say that is probably one of the greatest aspects of my experience
with Dr. Aceves in Mexicali. I had my surgery almost 2 years ago and they still
respond to any emails or phone calls almost immediatly. I don't think I could
have been as successful without their attention.
I hope things are going well for you. What are you doing about fills? What

The band is just a tool, it won't help you eat the right things, but
it will limit quantities on many foods, but not others.
Your BMI is only 32, so you'll have to check to see which docs will
even band you at that low of a BMI. If you lose weight you MAY then
want or need a tummytuck to get rid of soem of the flab. However, a TT
is NOT a weight loss technique. Also if you regain after a TT, it
will go somewhere else, like your butt or upper arms or boobs.
Do a LOT of research. If you can't hold yourself to doing what you
need to do, don't waste your money or time.
Tell us more.

Seattle Splash Feb 15-17, 2008

2006-08-22 23:58:19

Folks have been asking: What's the Seattle Splash all about? Where did it come
from? Here's what it's all about from Joanne Godmintz, the Splash coordinator:
My name is Joanne Godmintz and I've been the Coordinator of the Seattle
Splash Bandster Bash and Conference for the last six years. ( This year's is
set for February 15th-17th at Seattle Airport Marriott Hotel ).
Over ten years ago this event started out as a party celebrating Lap
Band weight-loss surgery in someone's home in Seattle. It's hard to believe
it's been that long.
This initial group were
really the pioneers of US banding. The largest group of Bandsters come from the
Pacific Northwest because this is where the FDA trials occurred. These patients
were sent to Dr. Rumbaut in Mexico who was the surgeon for the FDA trials. This
first group (I was not one of them) are why many of us are here today. Because
the Lapband was new, this product was new, not only to doctors but also to
patients. These original patients had to create a game plan with dietary rules,
working by trial and error to determine what worked best for the banding weight
loss.

Lapband surgery research

2006-08-22 20:18:01

There is a woman in a group I'm in who is getting lapband as research
for banding thinner people. She is only 30 pounds over and says she
doesn't really have issues with getting full. I asked her a few
questions about going through surgery when she is that thin and not
having eating problems. Of course, she ignored my questions. Why would
someone do surgery on her? I wish I knew the doctors name.

Banding in Cancun?

Does anyone know if there banding options in Cancun? I know some of the
doctors had a clinic there before the hurricane but heard that they shut
down. Any information would be appreciated.

Re: New here :)

2006-08-22 01:07:06

Veronica, I think this depends a lot on YOU. Have you tried everything
else that's non-surgical? A regular exercise routine? Programs such
as Weight Watchers? How long have you been overweight? Do you think
that, if you don't get the band, you'll continue to gain?
I do NOT think that liposuction or a tummy tuck are good methods for
weight loss. No surgery should be used as a substitution for losing
weight through diet and exercise first. Even WITH the band, it boils
down to diet and exercise. You have to monitor what you eat and move
more to lose weight. It's not rocket science; it's good ol' calories
in/calories out. At least, with the band, it's possible to eat few
enough calories to actually lose weight consistently and keep it off.
I guess I'm just a bit concerned that you're looking for an "easy" way
to lose weight and keep it off...and anyone who tells you that the
LapBand or any other WLS is "easy" is blowin' smoke. Getting a band
makes it possible, but it's still work in that you have to get the
fills, make the committment to eat less and *better,* and try to be
more active. Because even with the band, you can still drink milkshakes
and sit in front of the TV all day long. It is NOT a "quick" fix.

Encouragement for Slow Starters (Long)

2006-08-21 18:31:05

Hi All,
I am a daily lurker, but I have only posted a few timesusually whining about my
failure. I
am writing today with some encouragement for those people who, like me, felt
like a
weight loss surgery failure. I had surgery July 24, 2007 and was only down
between 10
and 15 lbs as of December 31. I went for my 4th fill on December 31 and FINALLY
I
understand what this banding experience is supposed to be like. It has only been
four
days, but so much of the helpful advice I've received is finally starting to
make sense. It is
my hope that by listing the things that had me confused I can save someone else
a lot of
wasted time.
1. Chew, Chew, Chew sounds like good advice but it didn't take on any meaning
for me
until I got enough restriction. In other words, chew, chew, chew isn't about
slowing
yourself down; with restriction, (solid food) will just flat not go down if it
not taken in tiny
bites and chewed to a pulp.
2. Drink plenty of water. Ok, that sounds like good advice and I always try to.
I thought
you meant "Drink plenty of water" in the same way non-bandsters mean it. I had
no idea
that, with restriction, there is no way I could stand over the sink and gulp
down a glass of
water every time I walked through the kitchen. When you said it is a struggle
for you to
get in enough fluids, I thought you were saying that you are just not much of a
drinker
not that you have to sip something every waking moment (except after meals) just
to get
enough fluid in your body to prevent dehydration.
3. Your band is a just tool; you have to work with it. As far as I'm concerned,
a band is a
tool with a low battery until it has enough fluid in it! I'm sure that every
ounce I've lost
(and not gained over the holidays) is due to the band because I could not
physically eat
the oversized meals I used to indulge in anywhere from 1x a week to maybe 6x a
month
on special occasions such as walking into a restaurant. My little tool has been
good for a
few pounds, but I didn't have wls to lose just a few pounds. Yes, if you eat
soft high
calorie foods because they are the only foods that go down easily you are
probably not
using your tool. But, if you can and do eat pretty much whatever you want, your
tool is not
fully charged.
4. Eat protein first, veggies second, and carbohydrates last (if at all, and
only if you have
room). This is because, with a proper fill, your tummy will stay full longer. I
have tried my
best to do this, but without significant results, it was just another diet for
me to fail. Now
that I have restriction, I realize that the eating order is important because it
is the only
way to get enough good food in to run a body.
5. Do not drink for an hour after meals. I stuck to this almost religiously even
though it
made absolutely no difference in my appetite. I was still hungry a couple hours
after
eating, especially if I only ate bandster portions. Now, with restriction, I am
staying full
much longer on tiny amounts of food. If I did drink too soon after eating now,
it would
probably just come back up.
6. Don't eat around the band. I was eating ice cream because I like it, not
because I was
eating around the band. Now that I have restriction, I understand that eating
good food is
hard work and takes time. The minute I take my mind off what I'm doing, I take
too big a
bite or swallow too much air with my water and I pay for it. There is no such
thing as
"eating around the band" if the band isn't tight enough to do its job.
As I said, I have only had good restriction for a few days, so I am no expert
here. I'm not
slamming anyone for their advice (it's all good), I'm trying to reach out to
others like me
who are discouraged and may not understand why this band isn't working for them.
I can
tell you that it is pretty depressing when you've done something as extreme as
lap band
surgery (and paid for it yourself); what else is there left to do except resign
yourself to a
life of pain? I resolved that I was going to try another fill and then, if that
didn't work, go
to my doctor and demand that he start running tests to find out what is wrong
with me. I
just could not accept the fact that all those thousands of people who had
success with the
lap band were that much more disciplined or had that much more willpower than
me.
So, here's my advice to others who may have gotten off to a slow start: Keep
getting fills
until you are sure you understand what it is to have real restriction. I though
that because
I had a hard time drinking water first thing in the morning and I got food stuck
a couple
times the problem must be me and not the band. Wrong! If I had it to do over
again, I
would be back to get a fill once a week until I got it right.
I think there are a number of reasons that I got off to a rocky start. First
off, I had my
surgery in Mexico so I can't just run to the doctor every few weeks. Since I was
self-pay
and lower BMI, Mexico was the right choice for me, but I think aftercare would
be better
with a local doctor and support group. I have been back to Tijuana for fills
twice and I will
be the first to admit that I have not called the doctor's staff for advice
because I hear the
same things I've read in every book, forum etc Chew, chew, chew, Drink enough
water,
Protein first, and so on. I will also be the first to admit that I have not
been 100% good.
But lets get real, if I were getting at least a little bit of help from my band
wouldn't the
encouragement have motivated me to stick to it the plan a little bit better? I
am a good
dieter and exerciser as long as I see progress, but I can't do it alone. My last
two fills were
done by a radiologist in Paris, Texas which is about a four hour drive from my
home. Since
he has a two-week guarantee on fills, I told him I would be back down there
every day
until I had a good fill. Now I may be too tight, but as long as I can get a
little food and
water down I am sticking with it!
So chin up, Strugglers! You are probably one fill away from success!
Congratulations to
everyone who has done well, and here is to the rest of us who will not fail!
Happy New
Year!!!!

Re: Encouragement for Slow Starters (Long)

2006-08-20 09:37:56

OK since you posted and i am in a bit of a puzzled state
myself...here goes. I was banded 4/2/07. I have lost 40lbs. Not
bad right? Well ok. Some days I can and do eat like a horse and
some days I cannot get any food down whatsoever. My husband is mad
cause I want to get another fill, he thinks I am too tight as it is.
My surgeon is of course in Mexico and I cant run down and have him
take a look. My fill doc here in town is a jerk....he hates those of
us who went to mexico. So if i go to him with problems he will jsut
take all the fill out and say good luck. he does not use flouro, the
first fill was suposedly 1.5 cc (4cc inamed band) I had no
restriction then he put in another 1cc but long story short...the
original 1.5 was not in the band when he drew it all out so i MIGHT
have about 1.2 total in the band..i might have 2.5...who knows. I
dont dare argue...jsut happy to get fills. That last fill was in
August. I have maintained at this weight now since September. No
loss and no gain.
Some days I eat fine....some days i PB everything that goes in.
What do I do? Any guess what is wrong? and please dont say, "you
should change fill doctors." Its not a real option for me. Neither
is goin abck to Mexico to see my surgeon. So anything other than
that might be helpful to me...
Thanks in advance for anyone who can help.
Blessed Be
Laura

Hi there,
Dr. Neal in Olympia does fills under fluoro for $325.00. I have not personally

information on line. Olympia is about 113 miles from PDX. Hope this helps.

Something is going on with my port. The last few days it has been
stinging/burning around the port site, and I can feel the edge of it (I
haven't ever felt it that well before).

I have many questions

2006-08-19 04:12:20

I am still doing my research and reading peoples post. As usual I
can't think of every question, but here are a few: 1. When you are
first banded, and are waiting for your first fill, does the band offer
any restriction at this point? 2.What are the rules for drinking
liquids and why? 3.What is the normal recovery period post surgery?
4.Do people like me(with long history of heartburn issues)tend to be
more sensitve to the band restriction? Thats all I can think of now. I
will have more questions in the near future.

Plastic Surgery in Mexico

2006-08-18 19:19:09

Have you looked into plasticsurgeryjourneys.com? It is a support
group for patients of plastic surgoens in Mexico and there are lots of
personal experiences and before and after pics covered there.
I used this site to research my tummy tuck in TJ and had good results.
However, the site can get a little confusing because there is so much
info and seems like every PS has had at least one unhappy result. But
I would rather research all information possible and make my own
decision, no?
Good luck in your search!

Re: [mexicanbandsters] I have many questions

2006-08-17 08:27:49

All depends. No way of predicting, really. For me I lost much of my
weight before I ever got a fill, as I was just plain tight from the
start. Others need a half dozen fills.
Don't drink during a meal or for about an hour afterwards. Why? It
just washes the food through instead of letting it sit there and keep
you feeling full. Drink a lot of water all the time (other than
above), which we should all do anyway. Aim for 3 quarts a day, but 2
is minimum.
You'll be walking almost immediately. You may be sore a few days, but
that all depends on you, how much pain bothers you, whether you have
previous adhesions, etc. Most people go back to a desk job within a
week at most.
Some people have it improve, some have it get worse. Learning what to
eat and not eat will often take care of it (since lots of us ate lots
of heartburn-makers before being banded). Of course various OTC or
scrip meds can handle that.
Check out my website below for info on my experiences with band and
TT. Private email if you like.

America's obsession with Food

2006-08-17 00:28:20

I have been banded for 4 years now, and as of late I have been
wondering if I will always struggle with food obsession? I think so.
If you think about it, its everywhere we go-temptation! There are
times when I do really well. Then my family innocently sabotage it..
Food is a comfort, it is about celebrating, it is about good times. We
live in the richest country in the world, food is plentiful and easy to
obtain. I guess I will check into seeing a eating disorder psych. I
know this is something I will always struggle with, and maybe
professional help will make it easier to deal with. Don't get me
wrong, I have lost a lot of weight, but the stinking thinking is still
there, not as bad as before-because I do have more self-control than
before surgery. Any ideas? Weight loss surgery is not the end all to
our problems, maybe more emphasis on getting your mental self
straightened out should be required. Best of luck to you all on this
journey for life.
Just venting Cheryl

Re: [mexicanbandsters] America's obsession with Food

2006-08-16 20:11:45

Could well be, though believe some get past it. We all have our own
reasons and backgrounds, so can't predict for anyone.
Of course. I can tell you that as a recovering alcoholic (almost 18
years) that food is MUCH harder. I can never drink again, never go to
a bar again, never have liquor or beer in my house....but those don't
work with food, as we all know very well. You have to fight that
demon many times a day.
Even if no one sabotages it, it is still and issue. Plus, I think we
MUST learn how to deal with sabotage. Just because your granny says
"oh, you need more potatoes and gravy to stay healthy", it is possible
to say NO thank you, even to her. And if she puts it on your plate
anyway, like she's serving a little kid, you can just let it sit.
That is TOUGH, but is possible to do, at least most of the time.
Excellent idea. I think most of us can use that help, and there isn't
a one of us it will hurt. However, be SURE it is someone who knows
obesity issues, and not just anorexic/bulimic. They have some
similarities, but are really VERY different. If you don't like the
person, find another one.
Yes, many docs ignore the mental. That's particularly true with MX
docs, since they're not set up for that and you can't easily go back
regularly. Some US docs require a lot of counseling both before and
after the banding. Some of them are VERY restrictive on who they'll
band, depending on the psych consults. That is probably a good idea,
but something we who went to MX often miss.
I've found that these CDs are very helpful, and they probably will be
to you and others, too. http://www.bandsterme.com/
Having been banded for well over 4 years, I've not heard this CD, but
have heard good things about it:
http://www.bandsterme.com/surgery.html It is designed to help you
prepare for the surgery, and it should help those who aren't banded
yet.
There is also a TON of information that is useful to all of us at:
http://www.bandsterme.com/useful_info.html
There are links to good info on vitamins, nutrition, constipation,
protein drinks, fiber needs, calcium, fats, alcohol, etc, etc. If you
have a need for info on anything related to your band, it is probably
there.
No, I don't have any commercial interest in any of this, just know how
useful it has been to me.

Banded this past Friday

2006-08-16 13:20:03

Hi. This is Judy in Arkansas. I was banded on Friday
at Huacuz Surgical Center. I am happy. Just got back
today. Plane ride was rough back home because of many
delays. And that is a luxury problem.
I have confidence with the doctor and I like the
hospital. I don't know what else to say. Happy.
Relieved to finally be done with the surgery part.

I totally agree that aftercare is important. I am very lucky that I

me a couple times a week. I am very lucky.
I live in Wixom. Bloomfield hills is about 20 minutes from me.
Also if anyone uses myspace check out my site. I have been blogging

I'm confused - my doctor told me "no protein drinks - get all your
protein from meats and other solid foods. "
And the Patient Guide I got also says only low calorie liquids -
which my doctor says are things like crystal light.
Why are people needing protein drinks?
Thank you.

History of the American Stomach

2006-08-15 22:49:28

A Short History of the American Stomach (Hardcover)
by Frederick Kaufman ]
Description below
This is due out in February. Sounds interesting, even if it may not
be too related to lapband issues....but on the other hand, it shows
that some of the "diet gurus" of today aren't as nutty as some of the
ones of a century or two ago.
My current favorite is still the spams I get daily where I'm promised
to "lose up to 20 pounds in one day with colon cleansing". I may be
full of it, but not THAT full of it.
dan
Book Description
The extremes of American eatingour separate-but-equal urges to stuff
and to starve ourselvesare easy to blame on the excesses of modern
living. But Frederick Kaufman followed the winding road of the American
intestine back to that cold morning when the first famished Pilgrim
clambered off the Mayflower, and he discovered the alarming truth:
Weve been this way all along. With outraged wit and an incredible
range of sources that includes everything from Cotton Mathers diary
to interviews with Amish black-market raw-milk dealers, Kaufman offers
a highly selective, take-no-prisoners tour of American history by way
of the American stomach. Travel with him as he tracks down our earliest
foodies; discovers the secret history of Puritan purges; introduces diet
gurus of the nineteenth century, such as William Alcott, who believed
that nothing ought to be mashed before it is eaten; traces extreme
feeders from Paul Bunyan to eating-contest champ Dale Boone (descended
from Daniel, of course); and investigates our blithe efforts to
re-create plants and animals that weve eaten to the point of
extinction.

liquid diet?

2006-08-15 06:10:02

Hello. This is Judy in Arkansas. I don't understand why I have to be
on a liquid diet. I understand that I have to heal. But if I chew my
soft food to liquid style, is that damaging my stomach? I am eating
some cheese. I don't see how there could be that much motility. Please
let me know. It isn't in my head. I don't feel much pain.
Thank you,

where you are talking about ?

Re: [mexicanbandsters] liquid diet?

2006-08-14 22:02:05

See below.

BECAUSE YOUR DOCTOR SAID SO!!!! Does it really make ANY sense to
spend 8 or 10 thousand bucks and then run ANY risk of screwing it up?
Cheese is one of the stickiest things and the easiest to get stuck at
any point in your band life. Plus, cheese is high fat and high
calorie. In general, you want to avoid it in your new life.
When were you banded and by whom? If you don't believe me/us, call
your doctor's office or coordinator. Unless you're referring to the
pain from the incisions, you shouldn't feel ANY pain.
One of the keys to living with a band is to
Show Up
Suit Up
SHUT UP
and
FOLLOW DIRECTIONS
Yeah, that's tough for most of us, me included, since that's one of
the reasons we got so damn fat to begin with. But it is VITAL to
learning to live a new, healthy, and thinner life. Really.
If you want more advice on this from people who KNOW (not that people
here don't) what to do, who've been banded for years and been there,
done that, on most anything, join SmarterBandsters (which is only for
those who already have a band).

Dr. Kuri and many other docs are coming to Seattle Splash, Feb 15-17

2006-08-14 12:43:30

Despite rumors to the contrary:
I spoke with Dr. Kuri today, he IS coming to Seattle Splash, with Jomi, one of
his staff members.
We are planning a Kuri Patient Party either Friday evening or Saturday
afternoon, depending on Dr. K's (undetermined) arrival time. He is excited about
coming to Seattle again and seeing his many-many area patients!
The
list of other band docs, surgeons, weight-loss professionals, etc., and
the agenda, will be published later next week. Lots of interesting
folks, lots to learn, fun to play, bring your swim suit for the hot tub
and swim party (splash!), bring your fancy duds for the evening dinner
dance, come have your photos taken professionally, come let your hair
down and share with fellow bandsters and prospective bandsters.
So sign up, tell your friends and join us at Seattle Splash:
http://barbooch2. homestead. com/SeattleBands terSplash2008. html
On the website is a poster you can print out to share with other bandsters and
prospective bandsters.
PS to Nancy and all who asked: the registration fee of $125 (until Feb. 1, then
$150) covers Friday night party (not dinner), Saturday buffet lunch & banquet
dinner, all sessions, parties, fun! We have lots planned, it will be a Splashy
Bash!

Feeling sorry for ourselves

2006-08-13 21:59:38

I just ran across the quote below (which sort of fits with my sig
below, too). I know that all of us feel sorry for ourselves from
time to time because our band is bothering us, we're bothering the
band, we're fat, we're not losing fast enough, we hate the liquid
phase, we didn't get a fill that instantly made us happy, etc,
etc.

MAYBE the Seattle Splash at Seattle Airport Marriott Hotel has added more rooms for us, Feb 15-17

2006-08-13 12:55:10

Well, y'all, the below didn't seem to be correct according to the nice
lady I just talked to at the Seattle Airport Marriott. The lady said
that if more were added, they weren't in her computer yet, or maybe
they were added and all sold out again. She had no way of knowing.
She said the only bandster rooms she had left were executive king at
139. I got a regular room at 119 only because of being a Marriott
Rewards member. However, I'd like to change that to the 105 rate, of
course. Yes, I have a confirmation number.
In addition, I'd like to find a roommate if possible. I have the room
for Fri and Sat nites. Roommate can be either gender. (No, I'm not
trying to hustle any of the fine ladies on these groups, just that
I've shared with women before in a completely friendly and non-sexual
way, and can do so again...and yes, my wife knows about it).
So, if the Splash managers can sort out the room rate thing, that
would be great.
And if anyone else is looking at saving some bucks, that's fine too.

The Versalles Center is absolutely beautiful. They offer the Smartlipo
procedure as well as all types of Plastic Surgery. What I like best is
they have specialists. They have Plastic Surgeons who specialize in
Faces, Bodies, Smartlipo (liposuction which stimulates the growth of
collagen tightening the skin). If you want to have a breast reduction
for example and smartlipo you would have 2 expert surgeons in the OR
working together to give you the best results.

Plastic Surgery in Mexico - Versalles

I have SmartLipo from Dr. Maria Lopez there, and the whole experience
was fantastic. They knew what they were doing, did a fine job, took
great care of me. They gave me everything I needed to continue my
care at home (which didn't take much at all). She did my groin (below
tummytuck incision), chest/breasts, sides and shoulders.
If anyone wants more info, contact me privately.
(and, as always, don't work for any docs of any type, just a happy
patient)

My band horror story - very long

2006-08-12 09:40:45

Hello Everyone
I am posting this on the sites I belong to so everyone knows what
happened to me.
I must tell you about my experience last month with the band. For
those of you who don't know, I was banded by Dr A July 18, 2005. I
have been seeing a fill Dr in College Station TX for my aftercare.
I live in Houston. I used to go to the Surgery Center in Houston.
They had fills without flouro but the nurse practitioner left and
the new person had NO band experience (or personality). Deb
introduced me to Dr Stephanie ($200 w/flouro) and that is where I've
been going for over a year now (but never again).
Since I've had my band for so long (had 3.5 CC in 4CC band), I know
all of her tricks. I know I'm more restricted "that time" of the
month, when I'm on antibiotic and when I'm sick. Last Dec it
finally happened, the "perfect storm." They all 3 hit me at once
and I was so restricted I couldn't swallow my saliva. I had this
problem right after surgery and ended up spending thousands in an
ER, when all I really needed was to wait for the swelling to go
away. I tried to wait it out this time.
From Thur Sat I took in NO water (or food) and was throwing up
saliva 1 or 2 an hour. I was lost and didn't know what to do. I
didn't call Nina because I knew I was in no shape to fly anywhere.
Finally on Sat I felt like I was on the verge of dying so I called
Dr Stephanie (in tears) in College Station. Her husband said they
couldn't help me because they no longer live there and they were on
the way home! They gave me the # for Dr Garwood and said he could
do an unfill. Since I didn't know Dr Garwood, I didn't want to
bother him on a Sat. I decided to give it one more day to see if I
would loosen up.
Needless to say Sunday was the worst day ever! I called Dr Garwood
and was transferred to his cel phone. He was in Houston with his
family shopping for Christmas. He was actually right down the
street from where I live but of course without medical supplies, he
couldn't do anything. He told me he would call me when he left and
he would meet me in College Station for the emergency unfill. I
couldn't believe he was doing this for me. He didn't even know me
and he was willing to give up time with his family for my
emergency.
He and his wife met me at his office in College Station later that
Sunday and he removed all of my fill. I was immediately relieved.
I guzzled 3 bottles of water in his office. While there I asked
about his partnership with Dr Stephanie and he said he had never met
her. She was referring patients to him when she didn't have time
for them but she never took the time to set up arrangements with him
(how thoughtless of her). This is when I realized she had turned
away other emergency unfills when she was too busy or out of town!
Not good since most of us were using her as our primary aftercare
physician.
I spent some time speaking with Dr Garwood and his wife Janice. I
found out he was one of the first Dr's to work with band patients in
TX. His partner moved to Dallas and he is now setting up his own
office for Lap Band patients who have had surgery outside the US.
He specializes in internal medicine and his focus is before and
aftercare (he is not a surgeon). I hope everyone takes advantage of
his services. The man actually cares for people not just money. He
only charged me$100 for the unfill without flouro! He wasn't even
greedy in my time of need. That says a lot about a person.
He also gave me a sample of a special shake for Lap Band patients.
He actually created it by himself. It's not something he's selling
for someone else. The military is working with him to develop a
formula for soldiers because it helps wounds heal faster. I have
NEVER taken a supplement because they all taste like crap to me. I
drink a shake every morning and I love it. The web site is
www.myocel.com if anyone is interested.
Anyway I hope everyone who used Dr. Stephanie changes to Dr.
Garwood. He is a caring physician who goes out of his way for his
(and other Dr's) patients.
His contact # is 979-661-1160 call for an appointment. His new
office is down the street from Dr Stephanie's.
He will do fills during the week in his office or on Sun 8-12 and
Sat by appt
He charges the following (cheaper then Dr Stephanie too)
$200 first visit includes administrative fee and fill with flouro
$150 fill with flouro after 1st visit
$100 fill without flouro after 1st visit
He also gives you 7 days for a free unfill or to add to the fill

I'd heartily recommend you go back to Dr. O and get checked out.
He'll put a proper fill in and make sure there are no other problems.
It'll be a bit more expensive than a local fill, but you're worth it.
Check on cheap flights on SW or another airline.

Lent and old age

2006-08-11 19:29:29

I imagine some of you observe Lent, and some of the observant may be
choosing to give up something, do something for others, or whatever.
MardiGras, the last day before Lent, is February 5. Lent starts the
next day (Ash Wednesday). Gail and I have both already committed
to, for Lent, to give up all caffeine (in our case mainly meaning
coffee) and all refined sugar (i.e. desserts, etc). We believe we
can really do it.
Why? Well, the sugar should be obvious. But for us the
coffee/caffeine gets us wired. Sometimes in the early morning (we
get up at 5 daily) it can be helpful, but I also know that I get TOO
wired from it, and my blood pressure goes up. Don't need that,
though in general it isn't too high without coffee.
Oh, and since February 5 is also my 65th birthday, it seems like
starting something new to start my "old age" would be a good thing.
Maybe I'll be able to continue it after Easter as well. Should be
interesting.
Whether one observes Lent or not, doing something like this
(abstinence from something) can be a good thing. No ice cream for a
month, not even a bit? No "other trigger food" for a month or more?

can anyone tell me anything about Dr. Jose Rodrigues in Acuna

2006-08-10 20:22:57

I am considering going to Dr. Rod in Acuna for my lap band surgery.
Can anyone tell me anything about him? The pretty and the ugly
please. I haven't found but one negative thing about him so far and
wanted to see if there was anything I missed. Thanks

reply to the horror story post

2006-08-10 14:04:51

I am glad that you found a doctor willing to help you in your time of
distress. I would also like to know the name of his former partner
who is now in Dallas. I noticed someone added your doc to the list of
names on the database and it would be great to add the Dallas doc, too.
I will now give my story about Dr. Stephanie. About 3 weeks after my
first fill which was with my Mexican doctor, I overate and caused some
irritation with my band and had some pain, etc. I did not handle it
as quickly as I should've and finally called my doc's assistant who
told me to go on liquids immediately, which I did. But, by Friday
night I was having trouble drinking water without pain. The pain I
get with this is in my left shoulder. I also think I was totally
stressed out thinking that I had caused myself bigger problems that
really what was going on, causing me to have even increased
restriction. My doctor did advise me that I might want to get a
slight unfill. As I look back, I probably did not need one and
could've done liquids a couple more days and been fine. So, at 10:00
on a Friday night I called Dr. Stephanie, thinking I would get an
answering machine. Her husband answered to my surprise, and I told
him of my dilemma and feeling like I needed a slight unfill. He told
me I could come in the next morning. I went and actually when looking
at the barium drink go down, it looked fine. Dr. Stephanie asked me
what I wanted to do since it didn't look like I was too restricted.
Well, after driving 4 hours one way, I felt like I should get a
little bit taken out. Better safe than sorry. My band only holds 4cc
and Dr. Rod had only put in .8 to begin with. So, she took out
like .1 cc. So, I was very thankful and appreciative that I could get
in like that at the last minute, even if it probably did more to ease
my stress than anything. Remember, I was a newbie with the fills, etc.
Okay, fast forward now to a year and a half later. I have been to my
Mexican doctor for the first fill, Dr. Stephanie for the unfill and
fill, another place that will no longer take on patients banded in
Mexico, and finally Dr. Jayaseleen in Dallas. I came to the
conclusion that it was good and beneficial to have a relationship with
a lapband doctor close by. If anything major happens, my insurance
still won't pay and I would go back to Mexico, but at least there is a
band doctor in Dallas that has met me and has seen me. If I ever have
insurance that will cover things, I have a doctor nearby who knows me.
I actually like the technique that Dr. Stephanie uses in giving fills
as it is exactly like my doctor's technique (standing while getting
the fill and using fluoroscopy). Although she is a bit less
expensive, and now has a practice a bit closer to me, it's still at
least a 2 hour drive, so Dr. Jay is more convenient for me and I like
him.
I understand that you were in dire need when this other doctor helped
you. But, I will not blame or see Dr. Stephanie in a negative light
because she wouldn't run back to College Station. She has a life, too
and you actually waited a bit until you were at a critical moment. You
know that she does the fills on Saturday mornings. Had you called her
when she was in College Station, I'm sure she would've seen you. She
told you the name of a collegue who she probably had heard of through
the grapevine and it worked out for you. So, it's not like she didn't
offer any help. You could've also gone to the ER. (yes, it would've
been expensive) You are very fortunate that you did not have to be
hospitalized for dehydration.
Each of us must take charge of our aftercare and find the doctor that
we feel comfortable with, can afford, etc. You have the right to
change doctors and based on this doctor helping you, I can see why you
changed. He helped you out in a tough situation. But, it does not
make Dr. Stephanie any less caring or competent based on the facts you
gave. I'm sure there are others on here who go to her and have been
very pleased with her care. I'm not trying to start some type of "so
and so is better than so and so" argument on here or anything. I just
wanted to share my story about how Dr. Stephanie helped me when I
needed it. I also appreciate knowing of other fill doctors for those
that ask me. Take care and glad you made it through that ordeal!!

taking a week off from work. I won't be able to afford or to get the time
off from work that soon after my surgery. I'm hoping I will be able to go to
the Kuri bash but won't be sure till it gets closer.

Re: [mexicanbandsters] can anyone tell me anything about Dr. Jose Rodrigues in Acuna

2006-08-08 19:32:36

He's a good surgeon, a safe surgeon. You'll come home with a quality
procedure and infection is not likely at all. His stats are good. He
operates out of a clinic in Acuna and personally, I wouldn't go to a clinic
in Mexico, only a hospital but that is really personal preference. The
clinic is old and run down but quite clean and I've not heard anyone
complain about it other than it is not appealing to the eye.
There are negatives about EVERY doctor! There will ALWAYS be a patient that
cannot be pleased, or had a complication that was not the fault of the
surgeon, or someone who is arrogant and wants a luxury atmosphere for Mexico
prices. There are negatives about every doctor out there. You have to look
at what the negatives are. Are they picky and petty or are they bands
placed incorrectly, bad stats, etc. You have to look at the issues
objectively. Some patients are just a pain in the butt and nothing in the
world will please them, thus... the objectivity.
Complications happen, they happen with 100% of the doctors in this world.
The key to a good doctor is how they spot and handle the complications. So
there are negatives out there, if you haven't found any you may not be doing
research well enough. But overall Dr. Jose Rodriguez is a skilled and safe
surgeon.

Re: I have many questions

2006-08-08 18:55:54

I can tell you, I have taken a prilosec everyday for 3 years and since
I have had the surgery, I have not had to take not one. No heart burn
at all. The liquids are a part of the healing process. I am feeling
alot better. Very hungry, I am 5 days post op. Am doing fine. Good
luck. I do not feel very restricted at all.
