When you're getting ready for a fill, and if you can't do any food in
morning, that may be a while, since you seem quite restricted, post
here and on the Dr Kuri boards and maybe you can work out a group
going at once. I think there are six meeting in the San Diego airport
on Friday to all get filled by Dr. Ortiz. My first fill was with four
others. That way you have friends, and it saves on the van or
whatever you use to get across the border.
For my first fill we all wrote messages on our tummies so that when we
pulled up our shirts to get stuck the doc had a surprise. Mine said
Be Gentle
Fill Virgin
And others had other things, some fairly much on the risque side,
since some of the others are "in love" with Dr. Ortiz and Dr. Martinez.

I can't imagine why they'd want an upper GI if the fill is under
fluoro, but maybe he doesn't do them that way.
Regarding your life insurance be ABSOLUTELY SURE you don't lie or omit
anything. If they don't ask about surgeries, don't tell. If they DO,
be sure you list them all, including any in Mexico. If you have a
million dollar policy and you omit anything someday in fifty years
when your heirs try to collect and an autopsy showed you had a band
they didn't know about, your heirs will be screwed. Guaranteed. You
will have paid all that money for nothing.
Yes, "don't ask, don't tell" is the way to go. Just be sure you don't
omit ANYTHING they ask about.

Thanks, Dan,
Yes, I am frustrated more than anything else because I cannot eat the way I
used to. And I don't know what is wrong, but I have been so down for the
last 2 days.
I really do not regret this, I was just feeling sorry for myself because I
haven't adjusted to the drastic change. I knew it was going to be
different, but wow, what a change. I cannot even eat one scrambled egg in
the morning.
Thanks for your words. I feel better. I guess I wanted to hear that these
feelings are normal. I have been nervous also about going back to TJ alone
for my first fill. My husband doesn't want to go and spend the money. Am
still trying to talk him into it.

Primary Docs, Life Insurance, and Upper GI's--UGHHHHHHHH

2007-08-31 13:51:04

I guess I am in an awkward situation concerning my Primary Physician. I did not have all the co-morbs that most over weight people have. No high BP, no diabetes, no nothing. Therefore, I never really ever went to the doctor (I am pretty healthy over all except for being a fat girl!). So I never contacted my Primary doc to put him in the loop about my banding. Actually, I didn't let anyone in the loop except my family. Here is were everything starts getting sticky. I have a 10 month old son and a couple of weeks before my surgery with Dr. Rumbaut, I applied for life insurance. Of which I thought would be approved by now -- but isn't. And lets just say a pretty large policy. My first fill was back in Monterrey with Dr. R and my second one is scheduled on Friday with a doc near to my home that Dr. R recommended (Dr. Allen in Louisville). Dr. Allen's nurse said that I would need to have an Upper GI and bring it with me. Here is were the problem lies. My Primary
doesn't know about my banding and my records still haven't been pulled from my primaries office for my life insurance. I am afraid that if the insurance company found out that I had surgery in MX that I would be automatically dropped. So no upper GI and the hope that I will still get a fill. Dr. Rumbaut told me that I shouldn't worry that Dr. Allen knows where he places his bands. So all I have to take with my is the video of the first fill with Dr. R. Hopefully that will due. Has anyone else been ask for an Upper GI by US docs before a fill? Or had any problem with life insurance?

Hi,

Some of you know me from a few months ago when I was so naive, asking questions that I am sure pushed your patience. I was the one who was too afraid to tell anyone about getting the surgery and who could barely get my husband to agree. I have not been one to "help" on this site but one who always needs help. I am starting to feel that I made the wrong decision. I am starting to think that I did something to my body that was not warranted.

Any weight lost during the first six weeks is bonus, and not to be

fill. You also need to be exercising and eating right. Are you eating
protein first, then veggies, and carbs only if you have room after the

Hi Michelle,
I made an appointment and discussed my thoughts with my doctor. I
also took along info about the Lap-Band and he was so appreciative.
This explained everything about the Lap-Band. I also gave him my
Mexican doctors name, phone number, etc. I had also done the same
for my Mexican doctor. I got my doctor's blessings and he is so
proud of my decision and how well I'm doing with the Band.
If you have info on the doctor who will be doing your surgery, I
would copy it off for your U.S. doctor. Also, copy info explaining
the surgery and any other info that you feel will help him/her to
understand.
Hope this help!

Re: 2ND FILL - TOOOOOO TIGHT?/

2007-08-28 09:39:22

Hi,
After numerous tight fills myself, my advice would be to have a small
amount removed. If hot fluids hurt in the am, your fill is too tight.
Yes, we all are in a hurry to have the weight drop, yet an irritated
esophagus is not the way to accomplish our goals. If you could drink
hot fluids, yet not cold fluids in the am, I'd advise you to wait
awhile and work with it for a month or two until it relaxed...
Bottomline: Be healthy. When your fill is too tight and your
esophagus is irritated, your food consumption won't be the protein
and good veggies we need because you'll crave smooth, creamy,
soothing foods to help the irritation; besides the fact that you'll
never reach that level of fullness you need for true bandster
satisfaction after a small, healthy meal has been consumed.
Hope this helped :)

That's why it's important to stay overnight and give it a day to settle, Lisa. Dr. Kuri is more conservative with out of town folks because of that very reason.

I usually remain on the West Coast for several days after a fill and I've never had a problem with stomach swelling and I'm generally eating regular foods just fine by the evening. The tightening isn't common... it only happens in a small percentage of bandsters.

off!!!I don't think for my 24.00 dollars (I bought it when it came

What did she eat? I think readers will choose this book for this

Actually, for most bandsters ANY hot drink will loosen up and relax
the stoma. Cold will do the opposite. Makes sense, since that is how
other muscles work. Get in cold water and your muscles tighten up.
Get in the hot tub and they relax. And of course the stomach is just
a big ol' muscle.

Well, I had a fill in TJ from Dr. Martinez (asst to Dr. Ortiz), the
one in Texas that I described above, and then the current one from Dr.
Ortiz, with Dr. M at his side.
They key thing is to be sure you're going to someone who knows what
he's doing, which Dr. Kuri certainly does. I'm sure there are other
fill docs closer to you, but might not be cheaper from what I've
heard. But I'm quite sure I'll always go back to TJ for any more fills
I might need. But I might not need more, as I'm getting closer to
goal and am plenty tight now.
I'd never get a fill if I weren't staying overnight in the area after
getting it. That way if you have problems you can go back later that
day or the next day. Same reason I'd not get one on Friday unless you
knew the doc was available over the weekend. If I were flying to TJ,
I'd be sure to plan to stay over and consider it a minivacation. Plus
it is deductible.
Most important is to accept that the band is boss, and you're not. I
can't eat anything before noon or later. This bugs me a bit, and is
contrary to all my habits, but isn't really bad. Just takes a change.
Of course changing habits is what the band is SUPPOSED to do to and

Thanks for bringing this point up. So, the fluoro can show that the liquid
is going through fine, but then later you can find out the fill is too
tight. I didn't really understand how this could happen. But you are
saying that it is possible for the stomach to swell and thus create a
smaller opening and the fill becomes tighter? Then, I guess you can't
really predict this? I have to go to Kuri for my first fill. I understand
he is very conservative - I would hate to have to go all the way back to TJ
for this. It is a long way from NC.

Well, that's not really true. I've vomited before, but this was different. My surgery was about six months ago and tonight is the first time I've had to walk around and hover at or near the toilet for more than a few minutes. It took an HOUR! I kept burp-vomiting foam and couldn't figure out why the feeling wasn't going away. I kept sticking the toothbrush to the back of my throat to try to force vomit, but all I ever got each time was a little foam. At almost exactly the one hour point, I got the feeling I was going to vomit big-girl style. Not the bandster barf, but the deep down, gagging kind. WHAT A RELIEF!!! Oh my gosh. I've never been so happy to vomit in my life. I had a fill two weeks ago and haven't noticed a big restriction. Maybe I was getting cocky and ate the tuna salad too quickly. It was SO stuck. Coffee!

2007-08-22 23:37:01

I drink a 16 oz cup with 12 oz coffee and the rest skim milk and sweetner
everymorning, for my first liquid fill before breakfast. Doesn't bother me a
whit. Of course not much bothers me. . .I am pretty open even with 1.5 first
fill in my 4. band. . .
HOWEVER I do feel when to stop most of the time. Last night went out with
daughter after movie and she wanted a snack. Went to McD's. . .Had a chicken
sandwich and felt first stop after about 1/3 of it (bread was going down fine)
so gave her the rest! I rarely eat after 7 p.m. anymore, but this worked this
time. Wonder what I would have done if she hadn't been along?? Wouldn't have
gone, of course, but if I had, wonder if I would have porked down the whole
thing?
Oh well. I try to take one day at a time, and Saturdays I give my self a bit
more freedom than during the week.
I just reread the eating info -- I'm 7 weeks out -- and realized I'm not
eating any fruit. I'd been doing the protein, veggies gig. Today I had a lovely
bowl of cereal (2/3 cup puffed grains and skim milk, and half-cup frozen fresh
fruit on top) YUM, I'm satisfied and know this will last me longer than the
cereal alone has been doing.

They say the third times the charm!
I think we all have something that we can't eat. Mine seems to be
turkey!! It can be ground, lunch meat or sliced right off the bird.
My band does not tolerate it! It's too bad because that's one source
of protein that I really like(d).

Dumber than a box of rocks

2007-08-21 19:27:59

Well, yes, that's me....dumb.
Anyone know the song "Kern River"? Old Merle Haggard standard.
Anyway, he'll never swim in Kern River again....because his girlfriend
drowned in it. I especially like it because I used to swim in the
Kern River and drink beer by it....
Anyway, instead of "I'll never swim Kern River again...." I'll sing
"I'll never eat clam chowder again".
The first time is a mistake. The second time is being really stupid.
The third time is being dumber than a box of rocks.
The first time was when I was a week out of banding and thought I
could have some soup...and the clams got stuck.
The second time was not long after my first fill. Damn clams got
stuck again. What a surprise.
The third time was yesterday afternoon. I'd had almost no lunch and
thought I'd get a little clam chowder at the best place in town, and
knew that I'd just eat the soup and potatoes and just chew the clams
and spit them out.
Well, one of those damn clams must have crawled down my throat while I
was eating some of the rest of it. And it got stuck. Well, I stopped
after half the soup when I knew I'd goofed. I left the restaurant in
a hurry and started driving home. The freeway. 430pm on Friday. Lots
of traffic, all going 70. And you can of course guess who barfed
while driving along there. Yup.
Maybe I've really learned my lesson this time. I hope.

Hi Julie,
I am two weeks post-op today, and had my surgery done in Tijuana with Dr.
Ortiz and Dr. Martinez (www.obesitycontrolcenter.com). I had a very good
experience there. I was lucky enough to meet up with five other ladies who
were having the surgery the same day as me (we all met the day before and
had dinner that night). Dr. Ortiz' mother (Mama Ortiz) will meet you at the
Lucerna Hotel when you arrive from the airport (someone will pick you up at
the airport if you are flying into San Diego). Mama Ortiz will take you for
your pre-op testing, and then bring you back to the hotel. The Oasis
hospital is very clean and nice (it is an older hospital but still nice, in
my opinion). The nurses who took care of me were exceptional (Randy and
Sergio).
Feel free to e-mail me privately at zanner624@... if you have any

Depends on what you consider low grade. It is normal to run a verrrry low
temp for a few days after surgery. It is the way your body heals. If you
have any doubts at all call your doc.
How do your incisions look? Anything draining? Red? Anything at all?

2007-08-19 04:45:47

I am just full of information right now. My acid reflux situation has
had a come around yet again. For all of you that are able to drink
soda pop.... Watch out! I just chatted with my Dr. office again
because I was ready to go in and have my band adjusted because of the
night situation with lots of siliva... Well come to find out or
should I say a narrowing down of possibilities it could be due to the
fact I had started drinking soda again.... I knew that I was told not
to but... I read that some of us bandsters were drinking it with no
problems. Now I know you shouldn't drink it. It has had me all feaked
out so now I am on liquids for a couple of days to settle the tummy a
little bit as well as the esphogus (spelling). So I thought I would
just share that tad of information. I guess the Nurse I talked to
said she is banded and went through the exact same thing.
So now I am praying that this is it so I won't have to go in and have
my band messed with cuz I am pretty satisfied with my results so far
4 months and down 57 lbs. now!

just hot and black, rather than a latte with whipped cream and
chocolate and all that crap.....

10 Lap-Band rules - X POST

2007-08-16 17:30:52

There has been many questions about eating, drinking as well as
exercise for those waiting to get banded or those in early post-
band. I got this info from Don Mills - Patient's Guide to Living
with the Lap-Bamd System:
The ten rules are:
1) Eat only three small meals a day.
2) Eat slowly and chew thoroughly (approximately 15 to 20 times a
bite.)
3) Stop eating as soon as you feel full.
4) Do not drink while you are eating.
5) Do not eat between meals.
6) Eat only good quality food.
7) Avoid fibrous food.
8) Drink enough fluids during the day.
9) Drink only low-calorie liquids.
10) Exercise at least 30 minutes a day.
The brochure I received expanded on each of the above.
I found the brochure extremely informative - has info about being
sick after surgery, constipation, vitamin supplements, other
Medications, pregnancy, removing the band, eating out, alcohol,
surplus skin after weight loss, what happens if we become ill, band
adjustment, plus more. Insurance, how much weight will we lose,
adjustments, etc.

Hot Chocholate and golf ball plugs and a fill trip in April anyone?

2007-08-15 15:33:07

Okay, the best trick I've found when I'm hungry is a big cup of sugar-free,
fat-free hot chocolate! 50 calories of chemicals and about 12 ounces of water
(otherwise it's too sweet for me) and I am FULL!
Of course tonight I tried to override my band when it said I was full and I
wanted a late-night bite of my half fresh spring roll (veggies in a Chinese
tortilla thingy). It got stuck. It did go down, sorta, but 30 minutes later I
still feel it and I fear this may be the first night of not sleeping in bed to
avoid problems! Golf balls and such in my chest. I KNEW as I ate it too fast I
was gonna have a problem, and I only ate a golf-ball sized piece. DARN.
ANYWAY, I have just booked a fill trip to TJ to see Dr. Kuri April 19-20, I'll
be coming into Long Beach after a cruise (I'll be careful eating, but I'm gonna
fill AFTER!)
My plan is to go to Orange County Bandsters on Sunday afternoon, then hook up
with someone or rent a car and drive down to TJ on Monday morning, get a fill,
stay over (maybe try the Lucerna this time) and fly out of San Diego Tuesday
afternoon. Anyone want to go and share car and hotel?

The only way I can eat anything in the morning is if I drink some hot coffee
first. I am able to eat one scrambled egg after I have had some coffee.
Your suggestion of tea is better, I am sure, but I still like the kick
coffee gives. I am still on "soft foods" since I am post surgery only 16
days but I still cannot get an egg down if I don't precede it with the hot
drink.

I just called my Dr. office and they said that possibly I do have a
clog!
I was instructed to go on liquids for 3 days if the situation is not
better I will need to get unfilled. I am desperately praying my clog
gets unclogged... Maye a little draino hahahahah ...I don't want my
band to be messed with it has been so successful so far! I just
thought I would let everyone know that this is a situation that has

head off.

I just want to say I appreciate the responses that I got. I have not
yet had to have a fill but my band has been tight from day 1. I have
not had to go through the fill situation yet. I have never really
thought that i have even come close to over eating, and I watch what
I eat carefully nothing to spicy or acidy. But I do work 2 jobs and
on occasion I will eat something late at night out of what was a very
bad habit. I just may have to stop that all together to get a good
nights sleep. last night I did not eat or drink anything 3 hours
before bed time. I only woke up once as to the mere dozen times
everyother night before that. just know that I appreciate the advice
and am willing to try anything.
Just a question or even a thought....
What if something is caught in the band what would you do? How do you
know? Is it even possible for that to happen?
Another thing for Martha....
I am praying for you and your husband! I have had to watch a slow
death in my younger years... It is so painful to do. I lost my best
friend to cancer and it was awful knowing that there isn't a thing
that you or the doctor can do to help. just know that the Lord is
opening his arms for all of us that accept Him. May the Lord Bless
you and heal your husband.

helpfulness to all of us here on this board. We all have Blessed with

Hi
I have had surgery in Mexico before. I had a tummy tuck. I have also had a
face lift, lipo suction, breast reduction and full face laser skin
resurfacing (for skin cancer) in the US. I don't expect to be coddled. Robin
told me to
make flight reservations and then dropped out of site for 5 days. Plus Robin
told me she would be checking her e-mails everyday. I don't think I'm
impatient or obnoxious. I committed to having surgery then no response. I have
a
sick husband and a 10 year old. I have to arrange for caregivers. With less
than a month to go, I can't just wonder for 5 days if I'm going to have surgery
at that time or not. Plus I would be charged for flight changes. I don't
expect it to be like the US. I just expect a little common curtsey. Once I am
there I don't care what time they do my surgery or if the hospital is new. I
just want to know when I'm flying in and out and if I'll be safe. I don't
think I am asking for too much here.
I've decided from the personal response I've received from bandsters that I'm
not going to expect much from them. However, it is a BUSINESS. They are not
non profits. They are in this to make money and they are dealing with
Americans. I do expect a confirmation of my surgery date in a timely manner. I
can't deal my family responsibilities without it.

I am sad to hear that, what's with these men, don't they know better than to get sick? It sure is hard when your mate is sick. I feel for you. What's really touch is when there is no hope for them to get better , only worse until they die. It seems like a slow death to me.

Re: [mexicanbandsters] Very Tight Fill

2007-08-13 06:01:28

I'll tell you what Dr. Rodriguez told me . He said to go without anything at all for six hours , try warm liquid then, if it won't go down, wait another 6 hours, try again, if it won't go down and there is not a fill doctor nearby , you need to get fill taken out the next day, not to go two whole days without any fluid. You are waiting the 24 hours to see if there is swelling that will go down right after a fill. I have heard and experienced swelling after a week of getting a fill. Everyone is different. I think we get sick and tired of hearing that said over and over, but it's just to remind us that we have to be alert to what our personal condition is and not go by what someone else does because they don't know all our circumstances and we don't know all of theirs, your band has to fit your circumstances. So you have to judge what you think about your band and what it does to you. Nobody else is walking in your shoes. Just don't go longer than two days with
no liquid at all.

Re: Very Tight Fill

2007-08-12 14:09:05

As I told Martha, I had a fill that I thought was too tight but
remembered my doctor told me to drink hot tea to loosen me up. I
have to drink hot tea before every meal or I PB.
It really has helped me because when I was at a party this weekend I
only had a meat ball and a few grapes. The food looked good but I
didn't have any tea and that was all I could eat or I would have
PBed.
So I hope you like tea, it's become my new best friend! Plus I have
to admit I don't drink water like I should but lots of tea and it
seems to go through me like water. I THINK drinking tea is a lot
like drinking water.
Cold anything including water tightens my stomach so you have to sip
it. Remember a good tight fill DOES bring change into your life.
We sip, cut our food into little pieces the whole nine. The
honeymoon is over... and the loosing begins.

If you receive a fill (this is my 2nd day with the fill) and it is
too tight, should you wait for a few days to see if it will relax any
or should a doc be contacted? I am not upchucking but I have the
feeling in my stomach that I could. If I burp it eases the pain. It
is extremely tight in the early a.m. with even problems drinking
coffee or water. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

No problem I hope it works. I too was in misery until I started
drinking hot tea. For me it has to be hot if I'm hungry and I pour
before it whistles and try to drink it warm then eat and I always
PB. So I've learned to let it whistle.
I complained too much about not being filled tight enough to get an
unfill. The tea is a life saver! Since my fill on Jan 7 I'm
loosing 2-3 pounds a week. Which is where I always wanted to be.
Let me know how it works for you.

Hi everyone,
I was finally banded by Dr. Sanchez in Monterrey, Mexico on January
16. I've been researching the band for 18 months before finally
scheduling the surgery three months ago. It was a very positive
experience for me. The hospital was beautiful, the guest house great
for recovery and the staff especially Sadie was awesome. I'm glad
that part is over and am ready for the incisions to heal so I can
feel completely recovered. I've been walking every day and keeping
with my clear liquids except for one slim fast drink a day. I'm down
9 lbs since Friday. I know it is best not to weigh each day, but I
am a little excited right now. I know the weight loss is going to
slow down, so I need to quit weighing except once a week. I'm glad

I have no thoughts to draw upon to give you. Mine has not loosened ...but with weight loss , I'm expecting it to loosen. Today I ate a scrambled egg, maybe one and a half scrambled eggs and have been uncomfortable all day long, not drinking water, or eating anything else. Finally at 7, I ate the center portion of a half of a grilled cheese sandwich, threw away the crust. I am miserable again. I feel lots of salvia in my mouth. I feel a lump in my chest when I drink a mouthful of water. I want to burp really bad or just throw up . I wish I'd not eaten the sandwich. (Maybe it's the bread)

One thing you may consider is that in Mexico they don't do business like we do in the US. We are impatient and obnoxious. They are laid back and charming and they don't do things in a big hurry and they don't care what time it is when they do it. So if this is a problem to you , you will not enjoy anything about your surgery in Mexico. If those things are of urgent importance to you, maybe you could search for another doctor to do your surgery, maybe some other doctor is faster than the one you have corresponded with. I went to my surgeon and anticipated having the surgery at 9:30 the next day. Instead they booked me into the hospital for 6:30 that same night, at my approval, but I did not get to the hospital until 7 pm, so they did me at midnight. They did not seem the least bit bothered by all that delay. They remained just as charming and relaxed as they did at l:30 in the afternoon. No big deal. Americans are much more impatient.

You are probably right. However, I think for them this is a business.
Ignoring your clients is not the way to run a business. I expect a certain
level
of customer service when I'm making a large purchase. A business should
anticipate their clients needs and be there to help them. Why is wanting a
response
to new information I have sent them too much to ask? I can even wait two or
three days. What am I supposed to think about them if my first impression is
that I'm not important enough to warrant a timely response? This is a big
decision. I'm looking for clues to how I am going to be treated in the future.

My 2nd Fill Trip (Paris, TX)

2007-08-06 23:55:01

Hey Group, just wanted to let you know how my fill trip went. I was
banded on 9/26/03 in Tijuana, MX by Dr. Lopez. He did an excellent
job by the way.
On Nov 4, 2003 was my first fill. I went to Texas Imaging and
Diagnostic Center in Dallas because at the time they were accepting
patients that were banded out of state/country. I only received ¾
cc. for my first fill by Dr. Jayalson, which did make a difference
without too much restriction, and as of January 16th, I had lost 27
lbs, but have been at 27 lbs for about 2 weeks. I called to make
another appt with them and was shocked to hear they had increased
their 15 minute procedure to $1,000.00 for patients that were banded
in Mexico, which was to me outrageous, but with the medical insurance
I guess they were not taking chances on others that they did not
perform the surgery on.
So after doing a lot of calling, and Internet searching, and
communicating through Mexican Bandsters (wonderful group) I found a
new place to get my fills, It is called Magnetic Imaging of Paris
(Texas) approx 2 ½ hrs East of Dallas, and they were accepting
patients. So I quickly made the call and spoke to Gail Parkhill, a
very friendly person (she schedules the fill appts). I had an appt
for the next week which was Jan 19th. My daughter and I drove down
on Monday morning, arrived to the Imaging place went in, filled out
the appropriate paper work, was called into the back where we changed
into a beautiful hospital gown, and was taken into the radiologist
room for the procedure. The technician located the port with the
fluro, then Dr. Clifford came in and chatted a minute asking
questions regarding when I had surgery, when I had my first fill, and
how many cc's were in the first fill. He then located the port with
the fluro, cleaned the area with iodine, deaden the area with a
little shot, then stuck in a needle and removed the ¾ cc., and then
added some fresh saline to the port. It was not painful, I could
just fill the pressure of the needle being inserted into the port.
Dr. Clifford then had the technician raise the table to an upright
position and had me drink some barium which was a bit chalky to say
the least, and to much was going through to fast, so he suggested
adding some additional saline, he did and then you could see on the
fluro screen it slowed up considerably. And he said that we should
leave it at that. Which totaled up to a 2 ¼cc saline fill, he also
said that after a few days if it felt like it was too restricted, or
not restricted enough to let him know and he would either remove, or
add more for no charge, which I thought was pretty nice of him. He
instructed me to stay with liquids for a few days and see how I did
and then continue like I had been instructed after my last fill which
was liquids/creamy soups/mushy food/soft food/solid food. I had
some broth last night for dinner, this a.m. for breakfast I had very
thin oatmeal, along with water. I also bought some more protein
drink from GNC which I buy the Designer Whey Protein Supplement
(chocolate) it taste good if you blend it with ice and some water.
I did have a bit of a problem this a.m. though I took some advil
which I should have taken the liquid Tylenol and it was a bit
uncomfortable but finally passed through, so be careful after your
fill to take pills as you might have some problems until your band
gets over the trauma of the new fill.
If anyone lives close enough to get their fills in Paris, TX I would
highly recommend Dr. Clifford as he has a great personality, and
makes you fill very comfortable and knows what he is doing. He is
also not bad to look at. He did tell me that he and his partners are
thinking about starting to schedule fills on Saturdays, so out of
town patients will not have to take off of work during the week,
which will help so many people. A big thank you to Dr. Clifford for
helping us bandsters out.

fill story

2007-08-06 10:39:03

Good idea Martha. I'm jumping in! I had my second fill last Monday and I'm now up to 2.2. The first was 1.6. I have never seen the doc. It's Charles Morton in Nashville and his VERY excellent nurse, Shauna, is the one who does the fills. They don't use flouro and since my port is sternal, it's VERY easy to find. She really knows what she's doing so that helps too. It takes all of about 10 minutes. I could literally have had someone in the car with it running the whole time. I pay $150 and she takes me back, has me lie down and sticks me with lidacaine (I have NO idea how to spell that). Moments later, she sticks the giant knitting needle into my port and I don't feel a thing. She retracts what's in the band to make sure none has leaked and then adds to it. I sit up with the needle sticking out the front of me and drink 8 oz water to make sure it goes down okay. If so, bandaide and bye bye. If not, she takes a tiny bit out. She says to give it a full two
weeks before calling for more fill or an unfill because it takes that long to really, really know for sure. She also says liquids for several days and softs for the remainder of the two weeks, but I went to softs in a few days and am already doing solids just fine. Dr. Morton, like many U.S. docs, is now only filling patients he banded because his practice has become so active. Prior to that, he did fills for those banded in mexico, but only if port was sternal because he doesn't use flouro. I know many say they wouldn't do that, but I've had no problems. It only took a couple of weeks to get an appt time.
dammrancher <dammranch@...

Tell about your experience with your fill and how you liked the doctors and how you felt about the whole thing. Tell about how long it took to get the appointment and how long it took to get the fill and how it felt to get the fill and what you saw during the fill and tell what the doctor said to you about the fill. The reason I ask this is that there are always lots of new band patients coming on line and they haven't heard about this and they need to hear every tiny nook and cranny about how this works so they will have some idea about what to expect. I remember telling about it when I did it but I'm to a different set of problems now and that's what I'm sharing, so if you'd cover the fills again that would be great. This site is like a continuing education course, it just has to keep on rolling along with each person contributing what they learn as they go. It's all we have to work with right now.

Re: [mexicanbandsters] Looking for an answer

2007-08-05 06:58:22

I'll bite, and venture a guess. You are eating too much food too soon before you go to bed. It is so full that it is trying to digest food still and trying to come up your esophagus. Maybe you could try not eating the dinner meal a few nights and just experiment and see if it makes any difference. Do you have a fill yet? I'm not saying you eat too much, but the thing seems to be that sometimes people don't realize that they are still full of food in their pouch and they add more and it becomes too much for the pouch. Cut way back on the amount you eat during the day and just see if it makes any difference at all, if it does , you have the cause, but if it doesn't , then you will have to keep searching for an answer. Maybe it's the types of foods you are eating, any tomato based stuff, acidic stuff may be the cause, juices could be the cause, experiment and tell us what you find so we can learn from your experience.

(I'm going to be thinking everybody has my same problems, see)

Hey fellow bandsters...
I have developed a strange yet irritating problem. For the past
couple of weeks when I go to bed I cough all night long and my mouth
fills with siliva. It is the most irritating situation. I am not
sure if it acid reflux or not. Sometimes I get a God awful tast then
other ties it is just plain siliva. I am wondering if anyone else
has had this happen. I am thinking I need to go see my Dr. but she
knows nothing about the band.
Any advie would be great!
Now just an FYI I don't cough at all during the day. But in the
night my chest is killing me from coughing so much.
Thanks!

Do any of you have refried beans, really mushed up, with a little bit of

The Unfilled Story

2007-08-03 13:19:22

in my band instead of 2.l7. he had it
I looked at his chart and it said he put in
he put in l.25 cc and that's what was in there. So I don't understand the
2.l7 that
That is really interesting Martha. I got 1.2 on my refill a few weeks ago
and only feel mild restriction. I do occasionally PB, but that is when I am
really hungry and start to eat too fast with too big a bite at first, and I
get that golf ball in the chest feeling and all the slime. But I am
learning and remembering to take little tiny bites at first and to chew
really well. There are also things that just will not go down well, rice is
one of them, it seems to ball up immediately and stop me up. I have been
planning to go back for another fill, and if Dr.Maese does as before he will
probably give me 0.8 which would put me to 2.0..... but now I listen to
your experience and I wonder how much more of a fill I should have.
I know I can eat too much at the fill level I am at, but I do not want to
be too tight and have the soft foods only syndrome that overfilled bandsters
get into. I know that when I eat normal food, meat, veggies etc, and chew
it up well, it fills me up and stays with me for a long time, and that I can
eat about half of what I used to be able to eat! Which is a good thing, but
considering how much I used to be able to eat, I think I would be better off
if I could eat about 1/4 of what I used to be able to eat! We went out for
dinner the other night to one of our favorite seafood restaurants. I had a
mixed seafood platter, they are huge. I was able to eat the two catfish
filets, a couple of scallops and about 3 fried oysters, a couple of bites of
coleslaw and maybe 5 french fries. My husband ate the other 5 oysters and
the rest of my coleslaw and the platter was cleared with a huge mound of
fries and onion rings still remaining, which I guarantee you in the past I
would have eaten! When I eat things like yogurt, it doesn't stay with me
for very long. There is a temptation to eat the soft easy things, like
soups and yogurts because they don't cause the PBing instead of eating the
solid stuff the right way.
