loose skin

2008-02-29 11:59:48

I'm putting the cart before the horse a little here, but it never hurts to be prepared. I'm wondering about plastic surgery on the thighs..........where are the scars? I had my yearly physical today and the doc was telling me to be patient about skin. I'm 36 and she said that she had her third child at 40 and it took her 2 full years to return to normal, but that SHE DID.

Roz, I'm not much help on the fills in PA, but I will encourage you

following all the rules, get goin'! I think I posted something in

I let the doc pick the band size.

Well, I guess I wasn't thinking when I got this band. I'm having a horrible time looking for fill docs and it is very depressing. I have a few docs in PA who would like to be trained on doing fills and have been working on getting this worked out. I know that I might be obsessing, however, that's my nature and I am due for a fill, so instead of worrying about what I'm going to do and when I'm going to get one, I would like to see if anyone has any suggestions of docs in Pennsylvania ??
Thanks,

Re: [mexicanbandsters] What size is your band?

2008-02-26 11:47:53

Yes, you have too much time. Seriously, the band size is for the doc
to decide. He's the only one who can see inside there with his little
camera and tools to determine what is needed. You can look in a
manual to see what size of tires to put on your car, but unless you've
got such a manual about your body (I wasn't issued one, personally),
let him decide when he gets in there.

Hi! Regarding finding a fill doc in Minnesota --I live in Minneapolis. I was
banded by Dr. Ortiz in Tijuana. I have a local doc here - Dr. Sayeed
Ikramuddin. He was proctored by Dr. Ortiz. His practice is at the U of M
Hospital. Phone number: 612 625-8446. I have had two fills from Dr.
Ikramuddin. He uses fluoro. I personally prefer to travel back to Dr. Ortiz.
I
have also heard of a Dr. Peter Billing in Moose Lake. I've heard he does not
use fluoro. Have you checked on the MNBandsters Board? Maybe someone
there can recommend a doctor in southern MN. Why do your adjustments cost
so much in Mexico? Dr. Ortiz does not charge for fills. I pay $100 for fluoro.
My airfare is usually around $300 round trip.

fills in or around Minnesota

2008-02-25 07:29:17

Hi everyone! I was banded in January, and have had one fill at 5 weeks. I went back to Mexico for that fill. Before banding.. I found a Dr close by that would do my fills. I even started jumping through the hoops they said I needed to .. for them to do my fills. (see the nutritionist, paper work etc..) To make a long story short, that Dr isn't taking Mx patients anymore. I didn't find this out until after being banded. He was the one and only I was able to find that will do fills for Mx patients. (I called or emailed at least 20) To go back to Mexico each time for a fill, it costs about $7-800. Just for the basic expenses. I really need to find someone more local, both to save money and time.. and incase of emergency down the road. I live in a small town in Southern Minnesota, but am willing to drive up to 5 or 6 hours. So, anyplace in the Dakota's, Iowa, Some of Wisconsin, Minnesota, maybe even Illinois would probly work. I did check out the list on this
site, but haven't found one from that list yet. Can anyone tell me a fill Dr in the Midwest?? (Long way of asking a simple question, aye?) I would prefer one who uses flouroscope. Thanks for any help!!

What size is your band?

2008-02-25 05:41:43

What size band does everyone have? Did you get to choose or did you
let the doc choose which one was right for your stomach size?I was
curious how long a cm is so I did some math...(on a calculator)
11 cm=4.33 inches
10 cm=3.94 inches
9.75 cm=3.84 inches.
I also emailed Inamed and asked how much each band holds of saline.
The 9.75 and 10 hold a maximum of 4 ccs and the 11 holds a max of 9
ccs.Do I have too much time on my hands? LOL

Hi everyone! I joined the group about three weeks ago. Had my band
in Tijuana. Have lost a total of 42lbs!!!! Anyway, I moved to Dallas
for my job and found a great fill doctor-- Dr. Dobson. I met with him
at his office and then the next day for a fill at the imaging center.
My appointment ran on time and he takes care of his patients! My
experience in CA and Mexico was not that great with fills. I felt
that the surgeons saw it as an after thought and really didn't care
about seeing me again. Dr. Dobson is building a program centered
around our care. I think that that is great. He has office hours in
the morning and in the imaging center late afternoons and all day on
Fridays. Phone number is 817-446-6672.

Hi, welcome.I am not on the other side yet...I have my sugery
scheduled for April 14th with Dr Sanchez in Monterrey. But I just
thought I would share why I am choosing the band. My insurance will
pay for gastric bypass surgery if medically necessary but it will not
pay for the lap band. I feel more comfortable having the lap band
because I do not want to have my stomach cut in 2 and my intestines
rearranged.I chose Dr Sanchez because the hospital he uses looks very
modern and he is very experienced with this surgery...more than any
US doctor. And the price is much less than what you would have to pay
in the US.I have been wanting to do this for 2 years and I just kept
putting it off but now I am actually doing it and I cant wait!Dont
know anything about Dr de la Garza though.

Actually, DO NOT use a debit card. With the credit card you'll get
all your money back. With a debit card, you'll NEVER get it back.
Yes, it is a hassle to get it back from a credit card, but it isn't
really hard, since they're used to dealing with it daily. But banks

I went with the lap band instead of the RNY because it's adjustable, and reversible. Those two things meant allot to me. I'm very happy with my decision.I also went to Mexico, but I went with Dr Sanchez. He's an excellent doctor, and very experienced. Good morning.
My name is Celia and I am exploring WLS.
I have had two friends have WLS, one was a lap rny, one was a band.
Both have been sucessful and happy.
The person who got the band went to Mexico, to Dr. de la Garza.
I am leaning towards the band for two reasons, one, it's less expensive
and I must self pay, and two, the fact that it does not include huge
malabsorbtion issues.
I would welcome any advice, thoughts, or comments, and especially input
from anyone who has used Dr. de la Garza.
FWI, I have a BMI of 43, and diabetes, and I'm 37. I have 100 lbs to
lose.
Thank you all in advance, I'm hoping to hear from you!

Re: [mexicanbandsters] How much of a fill?

2008-02-23 00:39:10

It depends upon you and the size of your band.......I have the 11cm band, my first fill after 4 months was 3.00......it did nothing, I felt no restriction. The next month, I went back in, he pulled out the 3.00 and put in 4.50.........I could not drink water in his office I was so tight.....it was a truly scary feeling and I am glad I had it just to know I do not ever want to be that tight, no matter how much I would like to lose weight quickly...........he pulled out the 4.50 and put back in 3.75 and that was great restriction for me for about a month and a half (lost 10 pounds) and now I need another fill! I have an appointment for April 3rd with Dr. Billy in Truckee, CA, of course it is up to him how much he thinks I should be filled but maybe 4.00 or 4.50? I have heard of some with 8.00 in a size 11 band......it just depends upon you, the size of your stomach, the size of your band, how your band is placed, you name it.........

Good luck to you!

2008-02-22 11:50:37

Just checking in with great delight, I am AT my PREPREGNANCY WEIGHT of
202.Suffice to say, the child is now 14 and I've not made it back down to this
weight in that many years! I had my band placed Dec. 8.
I had been thinking hard about a third fill, and after a weekend eating too
much (but tons of exercise, we were in Vancouver Canada), I was REALLY thinking
about a fill, until I stepped on the scale and saw I was down 3 more pounds, for
an average of 3 pounds a week this month!
I thought about WHAT I ate this weekend, lots of liquids (clear Asian soup,
etc, before meals) and mostly proteins and veggies. Even though the quantities
were too big (and quite uncomfortable), I stayed away from junk and sweets and
"bad" carbs for the most part.
And I walked MANY miles. So I did okay!
I am worried about the cruise we're taking April 11-18, and FIRST two nights
of Passover seder dinners, YIKES. We usually eat those about 10 p.m., so I'm
gonna make lots of chicken soup and that will be my dinner (sans the matzo
balls). Gefilte fish is a good lunch for me, and what will I do about matzo and
cream cheese?? Okay, a taste and that's IT. Lots of veggies and fruit for
Passover and on the cruise too.
I want to be below 200 when I leave for the cruise, with a goal of
maintaining for the week, lots of ship walking, etc. They're supposed to have a
spa menu we'll try. Anyone been on the Carnival Pride ship? (And if I REALLY
overeat the first few days I may call down to Dr. Joya and see if I can buy a
fill in Puerto Vallarta when we dock!)

Gotta Sing it's Praises

2008-02-21 03:18:24

Okay - I'll try to keep this short but I just had to post today for
all those lurkers who are on the fence about whether to band or not
(whether they go to Mexico or have it done stateside). My name is
Laura. I was banded by Dr. Kuri in TJ on December 5th 2003. On the
day of surgery I weighed 310. I had never been so full I couldn't
eat another bite in concious (sp?) memory. I could get up from
Thanksgiving dinner (including 2 or 3 times to the pie table) and
already be thinking about making a pizza run. I got winded just
walking through Wal-Mart and folding 4 loads of laundy (only 1/2 my
normal load - 2 pre-schoolers) made my arms ache and I just wanted to
take a nap most of the time. Today - 3 1/2 months out - I weigh 248
and over the course of this weekend I built a garden wall, bagged 6
contractor bags (about twice the size of lawn/leaf bags) of assorted
pine needles and prunings and old mulch. My husband has always kept
the yard clipped but the flower beds were my job - one that I
avoided. In the 2 years since we bought the house the only thing I
did was kept it watered. My back is a little sore and I'm a litte
sunburned but if you had a gun to my head I couldn't have done 1/2
the work 6 months ago. Plus my husband bought me a bike for
Christmas (he's very supportive of the band and knew that exercise is
important to success) and I actually rode it around the block twice
this weekend. Please, please, please do your research - know
yourselves and what is right for you but also know that if you use
this tool it will work. I haven't been a saint by any stretch of the
imagination - I have eaten the wrong things, eaten too fast, the band
reminds me quickly that this is not going to work for me anymore. I
still have "some" of the things that got me to 310 but instead of a
box of girlscout cookies I have 2, instead of a whole pizza I eat 1
to 1 1/2 slices but only if I eat it VERY slow and chew very well -
otherwise I don't keep it down at all.
I wasn't really sure if it was going to work for me but I had tried
everything I could do on my own and my biggest success prior was 8
pound lost after 2 months on weight watchers. I am convinced that
this is a tool that can take me all the way.
So much for keeping it short : )
Laura

home sweet NOT home!!

2008-02-21 01:27:57

Well, I arrived back to the Tampa airpport at 8am. Waiting a ride from a friend, who forgot to get up.....lol no problem, been there, done that!! Took the shuttle home and took a nap. Lost my cell phone in TJ, and have since cancelled all service with PCS. They had a number called from MY cell and it had to be the driver of the van who took me to the airport, but they REFUSED to give me the number, so I told them where they could put there service, and that they would NEVER receive a single penny from me again.
WE met for the picnic which we were late, but didn't matter, cuz I am on lliqs anyway. Had a nice time getting to know more of the "Tampa" area bandsters. Hope they can all come over the the Suncoast hosp. on April 1st for the SEX talk.LOLOL
Seriously, my surgery went fine, some bruising, very little shoulder pain. Mostly aches from port incision when leaning over, or moving to that side. Can't sit for very long, get "stuck together" again!! Liquids are great for now. I try to keep drinking different kinds t/o the day. Stomach seems to rumble wether full or empty,,go figure???
Sorry so long, but the TJ experience was good, and I would do it again if I could!!!!

Re: [mexicanbandsters] different patients, different impact of fill

2008-02-20 18:38:52

I believe it has to do with the size of the person's stomach and the swelling that occurs after the placement of the band. I needed a mini fill when my band was placed because my stomach wasn't that big. There are some people who have never needed a fill because their band was so tight.

Bianca

gypsyqueen1968 <gypsyqueen1968@...

Why is it that some people are restricted with less of a fill than
others when the band size is exactly the same? Is it that the band
is loose when placed? My latest fill is working fine, but not as
restrictive as I'd have thought.

Actually that's the virus doing this. Once the system is infected it uses that persona address book to forward itself.

In the last 2 days a few of us inc. myself, Billy-Bob etc have
received e-mails from another Bandster with an attachment included.
Because I knew this person I opened the attachment. Stupid ,I know,

2008-02-18 05:41:15

Hey, Just wanted to say that I was banded by Dr. Sanchez in October last year. He works in a VERY clean hospital and has a very professional staff of loving and caring people. I would go as far as saying that it was one of the nicest hospitals I have ever stayed in. the room was awsome and the hospital had all the advanced technologies that the states hospitals have. I was really impressed with it. My mom went with me and she couldn't beleive how modern Monterrey is. Obviously your dad isn't willing to pay for your surgery state side so what can you do?!! Sorry that your not getting support from him. I'm sure Alma and Sady will make you Very Very comfy while you are there. Good luck and keep us posted once you get back !!!

with a question.... I am the one that had serious
acid reflux then found out later it actually was that
my band
slipped up and I had to have emergency surgery blah
blah....Was in
the hospital for 6 days and out of work for 2 weeks.
Well I am 4 weeks out from that I can eat like pretty
much anything
and man food tastes so good right now! I don't think I
had eaten
more than a bird could in almost a month before this
happened. I
have gained like 5-7 lbs. Should I be gaining weight?
I guess I am
gaining because I hadn't eaten in so long....I am
trying to watch
what I eat and the portions... I am going for my very
first fill
April 5th. I had my band intially placed back in
September 2003.
Should I be worried? I feel so good! but I can feel
those 5-7 lbs.
Should I quit eating and go to liquids? I am afraid my
dr. will bark
at me for gaining. I had lost almost 70 lbs prior to
the band
slipping without a fill.
Just looking for some comments. Kind of nervous about
the fill. I
know that everyone has had pretty much a positive
about fills. Is it
a procedure that you can go back to work right after
the
appointment? Are you sore, sick or anything
afterwards. I have
missed alot of work lately and just wondering? I feel
like I just
got banded asking these questions. I have been banded
for 6 months.
Well any comments are welcomed!

Hi Jennifer,
I am scheduled for banding with Dr. A. Rodriquez on Arpil 2. I am
glad to hear you are back and everything went well. I have been
apprehensive and excited all at the same time. Any suggestions? Did
you stay at the Hilton?
I will be interested in hearing your progress. Sending wishes for a

Am now offically a bandster......

2008-02-16 13:45:39

I was banded in Monterrey Mexico last Monday by Dr. Arturo Rodriguez
at Santa EnGracia Hospital. His staff was very helpful and when I
first got off the plane I felt so excited and I felt like I was
embarking on an adventure of a lifetime. My husband who was very
calm from the beginning got a little anxious when we got off the
plane. I don't think he was prepared because MOST people did not
speak any English at all. Even the nursing staff at the hospital
didn't speak English which really surprised me. Anyway...I'm back
and my stomach is bruised up and I feel like I've been punched in
the stomach a few times.Which I guess is a normal feeling. I have
been surprised by the amount of soup and liquids I have been able to
consume. I am really hoping by the time I get my first fill...I will
really feel some restriciton. Right now...I feel like I have to
fight with myself to not OVER eat on the soup/liquids. Anyway...just
thought I would share a bit of my experiences with anyone
considering the band in Mexico.

2008-02-16 06:08:40

Hi,
Has this happened to anyone else? I just took a big swig of Crystal Lite
and had the golfball feeling, then almost immediately pb'd much to my
surprise. This has never happened to me on an empty stomach with just
drinking. Disgusting, didn't make it to the bathroom but had the trash can
nearby. Man!!! This is one of the things that is a pain to me because it is
so hard to get in the water when I have to take bird sips. I used to guzzle
down 100 ounces a day. I think there are just days where my band is just
super tight. Boo-hoo.

Labor day bash

2008-02-15 15:38:56

Posted this an hour and a half ago but hasn't come through yet, so I
apologize if you eventually get it twice.
Just in case all these Bash posts are confusing us, the ORIGINAL TJ
bash (which happens to have a new location "Rosarito Beach" and a new
date "Sep 10 - 12" this year,) is also for ALL bandsters. Also
because of Dr Kuri's generous contributions and connections,
registration will be much lower than last years.

Nope! The 5th Annual, Original Bandster BASH, hosted by Dr Kuri, is
in Rosarito Beach this year instead of TJ, and is being held the
weekend of Sept 10. Sandy's bash is an altogether different effort
by an altogether different group of people and is not associated with
the ORIGINAL bandster BASH in any way. All bandsters are welcome at
the Original bash, regardless of where they got their band.

I didn't drive, but rode with Sandy in her van from Sacramento, and no
problems. She'd been there before and knew where she was going. One
downside of personal vehicle is you'll wait in long lines (sometimes
over an hour) to get back across the border. Be sure you buy Mexican
insurance before crossing, too, as your insurance won't cover you
otherwise. But the Lucerna is a nice place with pretty secure
parking, though there's always some risk anywhere you park. I had my
truck broken into in a parking lot of a nice motel in Seattle, so....

Insurance Complications

2008-02-12 13:06:08

For the second time in the past week, I have heard someone express
concern over being dropped by their insurance after having the
LapBand. Now granted, both of these someones got their bands in
Mexico, so I don't know if this is a problem for all LapBand patients
or just those of us who are going to go to Mexico for the procedure.
I am a little bit concerned by this as I do not have any insurance
right now (*oh the joys of being post-graduate school and looking for
a full time job*) but hope to have some within the next year.
So I guess my question is, If I get banded in Mexico, am I going to
be turned down by any insurance company that I try to get coverage
with?
Sorry for the terrible grammar from the English teacher, but I'm
freaking out a bit!
Thanks,

Well, I'm the "go a little over the limit, but avoid tickets". I don't
have a radar detector any more. On the freeway (speed limit 75 in
Idaho), I set the cruise at 80. In town I tend to be from 0 to 5
over. I've not had a ticket of any sort in almost fifteen years, and
that one was for going over 90 in a 55 on a rural highway in a Toyota
4Runner. (it was 3am and I was anxious to get 200 miles to where
there was this lady was seeing and I was lonely...and....you know).
I've not had an accident where I was at fault in over 30 years.
(since then a falling rock and a deer, but not my fault for hitting
anything like that...even to the insurance company)
I'll NEVER sit in the left lane going under the limit (unless that is
as fast as traffic is going) as those are my pet peeves.
Yup, it is a cop magnet....I'm sure. But I'm a nice, safe, and legal
guy. Really. To say nothing of old.

LOVELY place for one last *nice* meal..I had the New York Steak!
Momma Ortiz is efficient if a bit flighty(in a good way-hyper), Dr

You can buy bottled water in any minimart or gocery store in TJ. No
point to buying the more expecnsive stuff in San Diego. The Ciel
brand of water in the hotel is bottled by Coke or Pepsi...forget
which. Also, you can buy more of it in the hotel restaurant, or have
the bellman bring it to you, though that will cost more than if your
partner picks it up in a minimart. There are places to do all of that
within a couple of blocks of hotel, and also a couple blocks of
hospital.

Nope. Freezing doesn't kill most bacteria. Boiling can get most of the little buggers, but not all of 'em!

Did Anyone else get an Uninvited email from AnnMarie?

2008-02-09 06:48:49

Ok,
I start checking my email and there is a message from Ann Marie at
belighter.com with the title "hi". Now, I have not spoken to this
woman. I open the email and it says "here is the document" and then
there is an attachment.
I am very suspicious of this email. I think it was purposefully
sent with malicious intent or is part of a virus going around.
Wasn't she going to be banned because of whole fight concerning Dr.
Sanchez? I could be wrong about that part.
I am just wondering if anyone else has received such an email.
I was the sillyhead who responded sincerely to that fake poster so I
don't know if that is part of the reason either.

Checking patency of tubing

2008-02-09 01:46:19

I was wondering if anyone knows: Do the doctors check the patency
of the tubing by filling with saline during surgery, and then, of
course, removing it? It would seem a smart thing to do to make sure
of the connection with the port and the patency of the tubing. I've
never seen this question asked, so I don't know if they check it
routinely as part of the surgery, or if this is something that I
should consider asking to have done. Any comments?

That is because they usually fill up the water for the ice cubes from the tap which you shouldn't drink. I would bring bottled water. Jena

Last Minute Nagging Questions about Hotel Lucerna and Oasis Hospital

2008-02-08 08:49:09

Does anyone know if the water is safe to drink at both the hotel and
the hospital in TJ?
My friend's co-worker recently had lap band surgery in Monterey,
Mexico and got diarrhea from the ice cubes at their hotel there.
Thanks in advance for an answer.

Fills after surgery in TJ (x-post)

2008-02-07 22:50:56

Hi all,
I'm 3 weeks out and am starting to research getting my first fill
(in about 3 weeks).
I had my surgery in TJ with Dr. Ortiz (nothing but good things to
say). I live on the East Coast so a flight to San Diego is long and
a little pricey. I would stay the weekend at a hotel. This makes
this a weekend affair with a LONG flight home due to the time zone
changes (7-8 hours home). This is a lot of time for a quick
procedure and I worry if it's too tight, I will be far away
from the place where I had my fill. However, I have a lot of
confidence in Dr. Ortiz's staff and know my port is in good hands.
I have a good relationship with that office.
For those who had their procedures in Mexico or abroad and travel
back for fills. If you had a too tight fill, did you realize it
before you left? If not and you needed an unfill, what did you do?
There are two local doctors I can see for my fill but I have a mini
port and would like to have a barium swallow and an x-ray to ensure
they do not "jack up" my port.
I'm still researching the cost for all of this but it may be the
same costs as flying to TJ, hotel, and incidentals and would be much
more convenient. Both doctors have requested that in addition I come
in for some office visits. These may be covered by my insurance.
Here are my questions:
If I get poked a lot by a health care provider looking for my port,
will this
damage my port or tubing?
Is the risk of having my tubing or port damaged high?
Does anyone have a miniport and have any anecdotal experience with
it?
If I pay out of pocket for this procedure in the US, can the
insurance company
get my records from this doctor without my permission? While I'm in
a group
insurance plan, I do not want to risk getting dropped.
Should I go back to my TJ doc or develop a relationship with these
doctors nearby? Please no flames as I am just looking for some
other opinions.
Thanks!

Re: Dr. Walter Dobson

2008-02-07 08:32:21

Hello Michelle,
I went to Dr. Dobson for my last fill. I did not have a good
experience with him at all. When I made my appointment I asked if he
did these under floro and she told me yes. She said it was $150
without and $250 with. So I made my appointment. When I got there it
was Friday at like 4pm. The person in his office at the time went
over so I didn't get in till after 5. He then said my appointment was
to late for Floro so I had to get it without. It took him over 1 hour
to find my port. At the biginning I told him where it was on my first
fill and he insisted on it being almost 3 inches further up. Well,
after an hour he finally found it and it was exactly where I told him
it was in the first place. Then after I was back on solids (2 days
later) I called and told him that I didn't have anymore restriction
then before the fill and was told to give it 2 weeks and call back if
still not restricted. I did just that and so when I was on my way to
his office I called to confirm that it was still under the last fill
charge since I talked to him and told him I had no restriction right
after my fill. He would not back his work and told me every time he
stuck me would be a new charge. If this were the case then I should
have paid him several thousand dollars. i mean, how many times did he
poke me in that hour it took him to find my port?
If you are getting it with Floro maybe it will be better but he told
me most all his patients he does without floro. Good Luck!!

Hello People,
I have a fill scheduled with Dr. Sanchez for Next Saturday (03/27/04)

Dr. Sanchez is gonna be in Matamoros. The fill cost will be no more
then $120 with Floro. I'm looking for someone that is willing to
split the travel expenses. My appointment is for 12 noon so I was
thinking about driving most of it on Friday night. Anyone interested
please either reply here or can contact me directly on my cell @ 214-

Re: No Motrin or Ibuprofen with a Band...Ever!?

2008-02-06 16:52:24

Christy - hilarious! hole in the yard, eh? you must get it pretty
bad. I don't know if the rule includes after the band heals, but
that's what the handout said from my local fill doc (Dr. Charles
Morton in Nashville). It was on the "living with the band" section,
not just the post-op instructions. I have rheumatoid arthritis and
was told by Dr. Rumbaut that Vioxx was okay, but I've also heard
otherwise so WHO KNOWS!?? I'd probably stick with Tylenol, Advil and
Motrin just to be safe, but ask your surgeon. Maybe Dan knows for
sure.

No Motrin or Ibuprofen with a Band...Ever!?

2008-02-06 06:59:04

Motrin and Ibuprofen has been a lifesaver during "certain times of
the month" and it has kept me from being killing someone and being
on the six o'clock news.
Even after the band has healed you can't have Motrin?
Please, tell me it's not so. And, if it is, I will need help

bad shoulder pain after flu

2008-02-06 02:03:24

Hi,
On Monday (5 days ago) I came down with a terrible stomach virus that
had me up in the middle of the night thowing up. Even after there
was nothing left in my stomach I continued to have dry heaves.
I have been pretty sick all week but no more vomiting. I guess it
would be a good idea to have the anti-nausea medication on hand for
us banded people.
But what I am worried about is for the last few days I have been
having terrible shoulder pain (the referred pain from the diaphram
stitch, I assume). Tonight it is particularly bad. It hurts to
breath. It feels worse than the day of surgery. I hope I didn't
damage anything. I know that we are supposed to avoid vomiting at
all costs, but there was nothing I could do about it.
Is this normal - the pain after throwing up? Should I be more
concerned about slippage or something else? I hope this doesn't last
cause it is very uncomfortable.

TJ Bash on Labor Day Weekend Anyway!!! (x-post)

2008-02-05 14:40:43

Since the TJ Bash has changed to the Rosarito Bash :-( and many
people, including myself, planned on going to the TJ Bash over Labor
Day weekend, I say we also have a TJ Bash! So for those of you that
took Labor Day weekend off, please join us at the TJ Bash on Labor
Day weekend. For the rest of you that are independently wealthy or
can take time off for both bashes, I'M JEALOUSE!!! You can come to
both Bashes! EVERYONE is welcome!!! Here's the deal. A few of us
have talked and think that we should put together a committee to
handle all the details. We would like to have at least one patient
from all of the different doctors to be on the committee! I also
thought it would be nice to have a "pre-bandster" too. Please send
me an email and let me know that you're willing to take on this fun
task. Also please ask your doctors, plastic surgeons, veterinarians
(just kidding), etc. if they can come and we'll send them the
details. You can never have too much fun!!!!

I got the "be responsible" speech

2008-02-05 09:22:45

Got my third fill yesterday and got the "be responsible" speech. She gave me .8cc more and said that she rarely EVER gives that much at once and that it's a big responsibility. She told me to stay on liquids for almost two weeks and don't push it. She said that sometimes people need a kick in the pants and that they need to really see what the band can do. I confessed to drinking with meals. I didn't tell her, but I haven't been shying away from high calorie softs and liquids either. BAD BANDSTER! She said what I knew already: the band wasn't magic and that I had to do my part. I guess I haven't been paying attention and reading enough because I don't think I really realized that you're only supposed to eat 1/2 cup at a time and it should keep you full for at least 4 hours, otherwise, you need a fill. Other advice that was on the handout that might help new folks: no chewy candies; if you vomit, go back to liquids for 2 days and eliminate the food that made you
sick; no drinking 20 minutes before meals and 60 minutes after; chew extremely well; 3 meals per day; protein first; have chewable Centrum each day; anything other than Tylenol, Advil liquigel caplets or liquid Motrin may cause irritation of your new small stomach; average number of adjustments to get your band just perfect is four, but some take only one, others six. KEEP GOING BACK FOR ADJUSTMENTS UNTIL IT'S PERFECT! I could kick myself for wasting so much time these last four weeks!

update Deb's port infection

2008-02-04 04:34:00

We still don't know for sure if the port is going to be removed.
Deborah saw Dr. today & had a cat scan. Dr. thought the incision
area looked less inflamed, however he feels that port removal may be
best treament. As to the cause--now it could get even worse--there
may be possibility of erosion. She will have to have an endoscopy.
The fear of losing her band has her very upset tonight. Will keep
posting. This is another in a long string of problems for her. If
you are a praying or candle lighting person--put one in for her.

Dr. Grossbard Doing fills for Dr. Ortiz's Patients? Anyone? Crosspost

2008-02-03 14:18:02

Hello,
I have contacted both Dr's Ortiz and Grossbard with this question and
as yet have not received a reply. (Yes, I know they are busy men and
that is why I am asking this question here in the group)
Does anyone have any personal experience after using Dr. Ortiz for
LapBand surgery then with using Dr. Grossbard in Florida for fills?
I assumed that since Dr. Ortiz placed Dr. Grossbard's personal
LapBand and since they are collaborating on a practice in Cancun (For
low BMI patients) that they might have other reciprocating
arrangements. I may have assumed too much as I have not yet received
a reply back on this question. Or they could both be just busy. So if
anyone knows, please chime in or send me a personal e-mail.
Thanks,
Scott
